Charge an e-bike or e-scooter only while you are awake and present. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission[1] (CPSC) advises following the manufacturer's charging instructions and unplugging the device when charging is finished. Never leave it charging while you sleep or are away from home.

Use the supplied or recommended charger

Use the charger that came with the device, or one its manufacturer recommends. For a replacement or secondary battery pack, both conditions in CPSC's guidance matter:

  • The pack has been tested and approved to work safely with your device.
  • The device manufacturer has confirmed that the pack is suitable for it.

Do not use a device with a battery pack modified or reworked by unqualified personnel, or a pack made with repurposed or used cells.

Keep lithium batteries out of ordinary waste

Do not put lithium batteries in the trash or general recycling. Take them to a local battery recycler or hazardous waste collection center.

If your battery or device is subject to a recall or product safety warning, follow the disposal instructions in the relevant CPSC press release.

If you have a problem with an e-bike or another micromobility product's battery, CPSC directs reports to SaferProducts.gov.
