President Donald Trump said Taiwan had agreed to buy 30% of the gas from the proposed Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) project for 20 years, CNBC reported on October 14. Speaking at a rally in Alaska the previous day, he said the commitment guaranteed the project's success.
CNBC said the terms of the Taiwan deal were not immediately clear when it reported the remarks. Taiwan's state-owned CPC Corp had reportedly reached an agreement with Alaska Gasline Development Corp the previous year to purchase LNG and invest in the project.
The announcement also came amid differing accounts of South Korea's involvement in the $50 billion project. Trump had repeatedly said Seoul agreed to join; CNBC reported that South Korea maintained its participation had not been finalized.
Developer Glenfarne told the U.S. government in a report this month that the project aims to deliver its first gas in 2029, according to CNBC.
