Eight states filed separate lawsuits against OpenAI on October 14, alleging that ChatGPT was unsafe, had harmed children and had deceived parents, CNBC reported. The allegations have not been established as court findings.

Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho and Montana brought the cases in their own state courts, according to Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird's announcement cited by CNBC. Bird accused OpenAI of describing ChatGPT as safe despite dangerous responses from the chatbot.

OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri pointed to the company's age-specific protections, parental controls and break reminders. He acknowledged that no system is perfect and said OpenAI would continue working with experts to develop additional safeguards.

Pusateri also said the company was working with states on policies that would apply across the artificial intelligence industry.
