Katie Zacharia is leaving her role as President Donald Trump's press secretary after her first week, NPR reported October 16, citing a White House official who was not authorized to speak on the record.

Trump told reporters Friday that he had discussed the position with Zacharia before departing for a campaign rally in Georgia. He said he had advised her to reconsider serving in the role and was leaving the decision to her.

Zacharia officially began work Monday and held her first briefing Tuesday morning. NPR described scrutiny of her performance at that briefing and questions about her legal credentials.

When NPR asked the White House whether she was licensed to practice law in the United States, Zacharia said in a statement that she had practiced international transaction law with appropriate credentials.

She previously worked as a communications adviser for Trump Media & Technology Group and appeared as a commentator on Fox News and Newsmax, according to NPR.
