President Donald Trump said Texas, Oklahoma and North Dakota were "making a fortune" because of high oil prices, in a clip CNN aired on October 15.
Trump also claimed the country was making more money than ever because oil was so expensive. He insisted that he cared about ordinary people while anticipating criticism of that message. The remarks announced no new measure to reduce fuel prices.
Republican strategist Doug Heye challenged the political message during CNN's discussion. A former Republican National Committee communications director, Heye argued that claims about unprecedented wealth did not match what voters were feeling.
