The Federal Trade Commission is seeking public input on whether online advertising platforms should do more to prevent ads that impersonate businesses and government agencies. The inquiry covers ad-optimization tools used by social networks, search engines and digital marketplaces.
The agency is considering changes to its existing impersonation rule, a separate rule or other measures. Questions include whether platforms should vet advertisers, monitor their ads and remove confirmed impersonation scams.
The commission voted 2–0 to issue an advance notice of proposed rulemaking. That notice requests evidence and comments; it does not enact the possible requirements. The official announcement links to the notice and explains how to submit a comment.
